The organisation was successful in receiving $98,000 through the latest round of the Federal Government’s Maker Projects – Community STEM Engagement Grants program.
Discovery will use the funding to launch their new project “Beyond Curious: Expanding STEM Horizons in Regional Libraries”, which will expand Discovery’s “Curious Kids” STEM program to 10 regional libraries in Central Victoria over the next two years.
The program will be delivered in partnership with Goldfields Libraries and is designed for children aged 3-5 years old, providing access to engaging and high-quality STEM education in safe, inclusive library spaces.
Sessions will introduce early learners to scientific concepts in a fun and age-appropriate way, while school holiday workshops offer older students opportunities to explore topics like robotics, circuits, astronomy, and AI.
Maker Projects contribute to the Government’s vision for an Australian society engaged and enriched by science by developing STEM skills in students and youth under 18 years of age. It aims to foster creativity and inquiry-based learning, particularly among diverse cohorts and communities historically underrepresented in STEM education and careers.
Discovery is one of 26 successful applicants under this round of Maker Projects, who in total were offered $1,996,263.
QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BENDIGO, LISA CHESTERS MP:
“Makers Projects grants give young Australians equal access to STEM learning, including those who are historically underrepresented in STEM like girls or young people who live in regional areas.
“As a mum of a 3- and 5-year-old, I know how important opportunities like this are. Young children are inquisitive and having the opportunity to engage them in STEM activities in local libraries is a great way to help foster a love of science from a young age.
“This is such an exciting partnership that will inspire young Central Victorians to engage in STEM learning.
“STEM skills and qualifications can lead to some exciting careers that are crucial to the both the Australian and global tech-based economy."
QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO DISCOVERY BENDIGO GENERAL MANAGER, ALISSA VAN SOEST:
“STEM skills are vital for the future workforce, yet many parents feel intimidated by the idea of 'teaching' science. Curious Kids is all about breaking down these barriers - making science fun, accessible, and as simple as asking a question, having a guess, and testing it out together.
“One of the most exciting aspects of the STEM Maker Grant is its ability to expand the program beyond just 3–5-year-olds and their parents. Now, we’ll offer school holiday programs for primary-aged children and intergenerational days that bring the whole community together through hands-on science.
"Regional and rural communities deserve the same access to high-quality STEM education as big cities. 'Beyond Curious' ensures that kids in Central Victoria can develop the skills and confidence to be the problem-solvers of the future.”
