18 September 2024

Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters, joined local recipients of the Australian Government’s Local Sporting Champions and Local Para Champions grants at a celebration ceremony this afternoon.

The Local Sporting Champions and Local Para Champions grant programs are an Australian Government initiative that provide financial assistance for young people aged 12-18 involved in state, national or international competitions.

The grants can be used for travel, accommodation, uniforms, or equipment when competing, coaching, or officiating at the event.

26 young locals have been successful in receiving a grant this round, ranging from $500 to $750 for Local Sporting Champions and $750 to $1000 for Local Para Champions.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BENDIGO, LISA CHESTERS MP:

“Playing sport at competition level takes passion, dedication, and hard work. It also involves extensive travel, training, specialist equipment and clothing, and as many parents have told me, all those costs add up.

“For the families behind our young sporting champs it can be very expensive, especially for those living in regional areas like Bendigo.

“We just saw multiple Bendigo athletes feature at the Paris Olympics across swimming, basketball and athletics, which had such a positive impact on the Bendigo community.

“These grants are about removing barriers to allow talented young men and women pursue their sporting dreams.”
