BUILDING A BETTER BIKE NETWORK AND SAFER CROSSINGS FOR BENDIGO

30 August 2024

The Allan and Albanese Labor Governments are making active travel in central Bendigo safer and easier with major pedestrian and cycling projects to connect the city’s important bike trails.

The Victorian Government will invest $4 million towards a new, dedicated Strategic Cycling Corridor on Mundy Street, linking the Bendigo Creek Trail and Back Creek Trail.

The Strategic Cycling Corridor project will deliver a seamless walking and cycling option into central Bendigo, providing better links to education, employment, and recreation.

As part of a further $3.87 million joint investment from both the Australian and Victorian Governments pedestrian-operated traffic lights will also be installed at Chapel Street (McIvor Highway) and Hargreaves Street, and at the corner of Pall Mall (McIvor Highway) and Mundy Street.

The new infrastructure will also provide a safe alternative to taking the car, encouraging more people to get on their bike and reducing traffic in the city centre.

The works will be completed by mid-2025.

Once complete, the projects are expected to cater to more than 1,000 commuters per day, providing direct links to the new Bendigo Law Courts, Galkangu GovHub, Bendigo TAFE complex, Bendigo Senior Secondary College, and Camp Hill Primary School.

These projects build on the Victorian Government’s investment in the Bendigo Low Line Project.

The Department of Transport and Planning and City of Greater Bendigo will engage with the local community on the Strategic Cycling Corridor before designs are finalised.
