$3,010,600 will go towards Mount Alexander Shire to design and construct the McKenzie Hill to Parker Street shared pathway in Castlemaine.
This project will create a 3.6km shared cycling and pedestrian pathway linking McKenzie Hill to Parker Street via the Castlemaine Railway Station. This route is used by children and families travelling to and from schools and childcare centres, and by workers and commuters travelling to the train station and Castlemaine town centre.
The new development will improve travel safety and make it easier for residents to move around Castlemaine by walking or cycling.
This is one of 19 projects that will share in $21 million to build new or upgrade existing bicycle and walking paths across Victoria.
The Federal Labor Government is making our cities and regions even better places to live, building social infrastructure, connecting place and designing healthier, more liveable towns.
Our new Active Transport Program is one part of this, providing safe and accessible transport options that are good for the planet and good for ourselves.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BENDIGO, LISA CHESTERS MP:
“This is such a fantastic announcement for the Castlemaine community. A more extensive active travel network will boost living standards and encourage more residents in Castlemaine to walk and cycle to the town's centre.
“It is also important to remember that road safety is a shared responsibility – and building safer foot and bike paths will improve safety for all road users.
“The Federal Labor Government and I are delivering for the Mount Alexander community with almost $17 million in local infrastructure project announcements* in the last three months. I will continue to be a strong voice for Castlemaine and the Mount Alexander community.”

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO MOUNT ALEXANDER SHIRE COUNCIL MAYOR, ROSIE ANNEAR:
“This is a fantastic, and very welcome investment in our shire’s active transport network.
“The project to construct a shared cycling and pedestrian pathway linking McKenzie Hill to Castlemaine is one that members of our community have been advocating for, for some time.
“McKenzie Hill is a growth area in our shire, that currently doesn’t have great linkages or connections to central places and services in Castlemaine.
“While we would love to be able to deliver large active transport projects like this ourselves, it’s often just not possible, due to the high costs associated with new infrastructure.
“We’re thrilled that the Federal Government can help us out, and believes in the benefits of this project as much as we, and our community, do.”
